ADAM 17 Definition
The human ADAM 17 protein (824aa, ~93 kDa) is encoded by the Adam17 gene (ADAM17). The protein is ubiquitously expressed, and is a proteolytic enzyme that cleaves the membrane-bound precursor of TNF-alpha to its mature soluble form. It is also responsible for the proteolytic release of several other cell-surface proteins. The protein is located on the extracellular face of the cell membrane, and must be membrane bound to cleave its substrates.
