Arylamine N-Acetyltransferase-2 Definition
Arylamine N-acetyltransferase, the encoded product of the NAT2 gene, is the polymorphic enzyme responsible for the "acetylator phenotype"; rapid or slow acetylation of therapeutic and carcinogenic agents is due to variation at the NAT2 locus. The slow phenotype results from decreased or absent arylamine N-acetyltransferase in the liver. A relationship appears to exist between acetylator phenotype and DNA damage by chemicals that undergo N-acetylation. Acetylation polymorphism may be a factor in susceptibility to toxicity and perhaps carcinogenicity of target chemicals. (from OMIM 243400 and NCI)
