Calcitonin Definition
Encoded by human CALCA Gene (Calcitonin Family), 32-aa 3.4-kD secreted Calcitonin polypeptide hormone is cleaved from a large polyprotein precursor synthesized by thyroid parafollicular 'C' cells. Opposite to the effect of PTH, Calcitonin induces a rapid drop in blood calcium and phosphate level by promoting bone incorporation. (NCI)
