Creatine Kinase Definition

Encoded by human CKB Gene (ATP:Guanido Phosphotransferase Family), 381-aa 43-kDa cytoplasmic homodimer or heterodimer Creatine Kinase is a transferase involved in energy homeostasis that primarily catalyzes reversible formation of ATP and creatine from phosphocreatine. Important in muscle contraction, the reaction stores ATP energy as phosphocreatine. Three cytoplasmic isoenzymes have been identified in human tissues: MM from skeletal muscle, MB from myocardial tissue and BB from nervous tissue as well as a mitochondrial isoenzyme. Macro-creatine kinase refers to creatine kinase complexed with other serum proteins. (NCI)
