DNA Footprinting Definition
A procedure in which multilocus band patterns of a DNA sample are generated by digestion of the DNA with restriction enzymes followed by electrophoresis and visualization by hybridization with probes specific for repetitive sequences. In forensic medicine, the probes used are "core" sequences specific for simple tandem-repetitive sequences (MINISATELLITE REPEATS or VNTRs). The multilocus band patterns, known as DNA fingerprints, are evaluated for similarities with DNA from an individual (From MSH 2001).
