EC145 Definition
A folate-targeted cytotoxic drug, a conjugate of folate and vinca alkaloid, with potential antineoplastic activity. The folate component of EC145 targets and binds to folic acid receptors, frequently upregulated on the surface of many types of tumor cells. Upon binding to folate receptors, EC145 enters the tumor cell via folate receptor-mediated endocytosis and delivers the tubulin-binding vinca moiety directly into tumor cells. This results in the impounding of tubulin molecules and the disruption of microtubule assembly-disassembly dynamics, leading to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. EC145 specifically targets tumor cells, thereby increasing therapeutic concentrations of the cytotoxic agent while reducing its toxicity profile.
