Glial Cell Line Derived Neurotrophic Factor Definition
Glial Cell-Line Derived Neurotrophic Factor contains seven conserved cysteine residues spaced similar to the TGF-beta superfamily. GDNF is processed to a mature secreted form, which occurs as a homodimer that promotes the survival and differentiation of dopaminergic neurons, can rescue motor neurons from programmed cell death, and protects cells from the neurotoxin MPTP. GDNF is a ligand for the RET gene product. (from OMIM 600837 and NCI)
