Insulin Receptor Definition

Human insulin receptor protein (1382 aa, 156 kD, values for precursor protein) is encoded by the human insulin receptor (INSR) gene. There are two isoforms of the INSR protein, which is a transmembrane protein located on the cell surface that functions as a receptor for insulin and exhibits tyrosine-protein kinase activity. Binding of insulin causes tyrosine autophosphorylation of INSR protein, which activates the receptor and results in metabolic changes that increase the uptake of glucose into liver, muscle and adipose tissues. Dysfunctional insulin receptors are associated with insulin resistance, a condition that can result in diabetes mellitus and, in extreme cases, Donohue syndrome or Rabson-Mendenhall syndrome.
