Matrix Metalloproteinase-8 Definition

Expressed in neutrophils by human MMP8 Gene (M10A Peptidase Family), 467-aa 53-kDa (precursor) zinc- and calcium-binding Matrix Metalloproteinase-8 contains a hemopexin-like domain and is stored in secondary granules. Activated by autolytic cleavage, MMP8 degrades fibrillar type I, II, and III interstitial collagens by cleavage in the triple helical domain. (NCI)
