Neuronal Cell Adhesion Molecule Definition

Widely expressed human NRCAM Gene (L1/Neurofascin/NgCAM Family) encodes alternative isoforms of Neuronal Cell Adhesion Molecule, a cell adhesion ankyrin-binding potential type I membrane protein involved in neuron-neuron adhesion and containing 5 fibronectin type III domains and 6 Ig-like C2-type domains. A likely constituent of a neurofascin/NRCAM/ankyrin G complex, NRCAM may play a role in development of the nervous system. Vertebrate and invertebrate cell adhesion molecules in the nervous system are usually cell surface membrane proteins with multiple N-terminal Ig domains, followed by several fibronectin type III repeats, and either a transmembrane intracellular domain or a C-terminal glycophosphatidylinositol-linked membrane anchor.
