PRIM2B Gene Definition
The replication of DNA in eukaryotic cells is carried out by a complex chromosomal replication apparatus. Two of the enzymes that are part of this machinery are DNA polymerase alpha (POLA), the principal replication enzyme, and primase, the enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of oligoribonucleotide primers on a DNA template; the primers are required by DNA polymerase alpha to initiate DNA synthesis. These 2 proteins form an enzymatic complex Primase, in turn, is a complex of two proteins, a 49kDa subunit and a 58kDa subunit. This gene encodes the 58kDa subunit. (from OMIM)
