Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 Definition
Likely expressed primarily in vascular endothelia by single copy human SERPINE1 Gene (Serpin Family), 402-aa 45-kDa (nonglycosylated, predicted) secreted plasma Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor 1 is an acid-stable glycoprotein in plasma, platelets, and endothelia with structural similarity to angiotensinogen, alpha-1-antitrypsin, and antithrombin III. PAI-1 acts as bait for tissue plasminogen activator, urokinase, and protein C; rapid interaction with TPA may regulate fibrinolysis. SERPINE1 defects cause of PAI-1 deficiency. (NCI)
