Prostaglandin-Endoperoxide Synthase-2 Definition
A rate-limiting enzyme in the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandins, COX-2 is expressed in cells involved in inflammatory processes and has been implicated in tumor promotion as well as a negative prognosis. COX-2 is expressed in 50% of pancreatic tumors. Anti-inflammatory glucocorticoids are potent inhibitors of cyclooxygenase. Inhibition or lack of COX-2 reduces tumor growth and blocks angiogenesis. Aspirin and etodolac, both COX-2 inhibitors, inhibit growth of pancreatic cancer cell lines. (from Cancer 2001. 91:333, Medscape, OMIM 600262, and NCI)
