RNA Binding Domain Definition
RNA Binding Domains, such as the RRM, RGG box, and KH domain, mediate the interaction of RNAs with RNA-binding proteins. RRMs of about 90 amino acids consist of a four-stranded beta sheet adjacent to two alpha helixes. Within RRMs, conserved RNP-1 and RNP-2 motifs on the central beta sheets lie side by side; their side chains contact RNA. Found in hnRNP proteins, the RGG box is an RNA-binding motif containing five Arg-Gly-Gly repeats with intervening aromatic residues. The KH domain is found in several RNA-binding proteins in multiple repeats interspersed with RGG boxes. (NCI)
