Retinoic Acid Receptor Activation Definition
Retinoic acid receptor activation is induced by specific ligand binding, resulting in transcriptional modulation. The mechanism of activation entails four steps necessary to achieve biological activity. These steps are as follows: 1) high-affinity binding of the retinoic acid signaling ligand to specific soluble cytoplasmic target carrier proteins at or near the cell membrane; 2) transport to the nucleus; 3) selective binding to DNA response elements in target genes; and 4) enhanced transcriptional activity of specific target genes.
