Riluzole Definition
A benzathiozole derivative with neuroprotective property. Although the mechanism of action has not been fully elucidated, riluzole may protect neural tissue by inhibiting glutamate release from presynaptic endings in the central nervous system. The agent also blocks postsynaptic NMDA-kainate-type glutamate receptors and inhibits voltage-dependent sodium channels. The inhibition of glutamatergic neurotransmission results in muscle relaxation and sedative effects.
