SPO11 Homolog Protein Definition
SPO11 Meiotic Protein Covalently Bound to DSB-Like (SPO11), a protein encoded by the Spo11 gene, belongs to the TOP6A family. Meiotic recombination and proper segregation of chromosomes are initiated by the formation of double-strand breaks (DSBs) in paired homologs. Located in the nucleus, SPO11 is required for meiotic DSB formation and is covalently linked to the 5-prime end of DSBs during meiosis. SPO11 mediates DNA cleavage with assistance from a large number of other proteins, by a topoisomerase-like transesterase mechanism. SPO11 is highly expressed in testis. Two isoforms, 1 and 2, may be produced by alternative splicing. (NCI)
