SWI1 Definition
A component of the SWI/SNF global transcription activator complex, SWI1 acts in complex with Snf2p, Snf5p, Snf6p, and Swi3p to assist gene-specific activators through nucleosome/chromatin remodeling. SWI1 is involved in the regulation of many genes, including ADH1, ADH2, GAL1, HO, INO1 and SUC2. The SWI/SNF complex is required for induced expression of many genes and alters chromatin structure to facilitate binding of gene-specific dedicated transcription factors. A zinc finger non-specific RNA polymerase II transcription factor, SWI1 contains an ARID domain. (from SWISS-PROT P09547, SGD S0005937, and NCI)
