Small Inducible Cytokine-A5 Definition
A member of the interleukin-8 superfamily of cytokines, RANTES is released from platelets and activated T-cells, and is a selective chemoattractant for eosinophils, monocytes, and memory T-lymphocytes. RANTES expression is increased more than ten-fold in peripheral lymphocytes following mitogenic or antigenic stimulation. RANTES is one of the natural ligands for the chemokine receptor CCR5. Chemokines RANTES, MIP-1 alpha, and MIP-1 beta are major HIV-suppressive factors produced by CD8-positive T-cells. (from OMIM 187011 and NCI)
