TAF-172 Definition

TAF172 is an SNF2/RAD54 helicase family member that regulates transcription in association with TBP. Transcription initiation by RNA polymerase II requires TBP and TAFs, in two complexes, TFIID and B-TFIID. TFIID is composed of TBP and many TAFs. The majority of TBP is present in B-TFIID, composed of TBP and TAF172, and has DNA-dependent ATPase activity. TAF172 harbors seven ATPase characteristic motifs and possesses DNA-dependent ATPase activity. The stable association of TBP and TAF172 requires DNA. TAF172 drives the dissociation of TBP from DNA, freeing the TBP to associate with other TATA boxes or TATA-less promoters.
