TBP-Associated Factor-2 Definition
Encoded by human TAF2 Gene, 1,199-aa TBP-Associated Factor 2 is one of the larger subunits associated with TFIID, shares 53% identity with its Drosophila homologue, and contains a stretch of 7 His residues near the C terminus. Stably associated with TAF2C1, TAF2D, and TBP as an essential cofactor for TFIID/TBP-dependent transcription from promoters containing initiator elements, TAF2B contributes to interactions that determine response of the complex to activators. TFIID is composed of TBP and many evolutionarily conserved TAFs, which participate in basal transcription, serve as coactivators, and function in promoter recognition or modify general transcription factors to facilitate complex assembly and transcription initiation. Multimeric protein complex TFIID binds to the core promoter to position polymerase, serves as scaffold for assembly of the transcription complex, and acts as a channel for regulatory signals. (NCI)
