Topoisomerase-III Beta Definition
Expressed as 3 alternative isoforms in testis, heart, skeletal muscle, thymus, kidney, and pancreas by human TOP3B Gene (Topoisomerase I/III Family), Topoisomerase III Beta is a DNA topoisomerase that interacts with DNA helicase SGS1; plays a role in DNA recombination, cellular aging, and maintenance of genome stability; and controls/alters DNA topology by relieving torsional stress in negatively supercoiled DNA during transcription. TOP3B catalyzes transient ATP-independent breaking and rejoining of DNA single-strands. Alternative C-terminal splicing results in three transcript variants that have distinct tissue specificity.
