Tumor Protein-p53 Definition

A homo-tetrameric, DNA-binding, trans-activator of genes involved in cell division. p53 induces growth arrest or apoptosis and is mutated or inactivated in about 60% of cancers. JNK-p53 and mdm2-p53 complexes regulate ubiquitination and degradation of p53. (from SWISS-PROT P04637, OMIM 191170, and NCI)
