Zinc Finger MYND Domain Containing Protein-1 Definition

Expressed in testis and skeletal muscle by human SMYD3 Gene, 428-aa 49-kDa Zinc Finger MYND Domain Containing Protein 1 is a CCCTCC promoter-binding histone methyltransferase and transcriptional regulator that contains an N-terminal MYND-type zinc finger domain followed by a SET domain. Cytoplasmic at G0/G1 and nuclear at S and G2/M, SMYD3 appears to enhance cell proliferation. Through interaction with RNA helicase HELZ, SMYD3 forms a complex with RNA polymerase II. Enhanced by heat-shock protein HSP90A, the SET domain shows histone H3 lys4-specific methyltransferase activity and transcriptional activation of oncogenes, homeobox genes, and cell-cycle regulation genes. (NCI)
